The nature center's 7+ miles of hiking trails traverse bluff forestland, an open woodland interspersed with hill prairie openings holding uncommon prairie plant species such as bottlebrush grass, pussytoes and golden Alexander. Chipmunks, squirrels and White-tailed Deer are common inhabitants. Over 100 woodland bird species commonly use the park as migrants, winter visitors or year-round residents. The nature center's bird feeding/watering station is always busy with chickadees, titmice, Whitebreasted Nuthatch and Downy Woodpecker, as well as warblers, vireos and other neotropical species, particularly during migrations. Please contact the nature center for a schedule of its tours and environmental education programs. Color-coded hiking trails run along most of the rivers. Trails span the gamut from easy paths for the entire family to challenging routes which involve going down ladders or rappelling. Those intending to rappel should engage the services of a professional guide, certified for this type of activity. Please stop by the information center to receive a list of guidelines for visitors and an update on trail conditions. In short, Ahziv offers everything required for an enjoyable and relaxing summer?s day. The natural embayed coast is particularly beautiful where the water between the rocks is inhabited. If you look carefully, you can spot sea anemones, sea urchins, and small octopi hiding beneath the rocks. In July and August the sea turtles leave the water to lay their eggs on the sand. Slightly offshore are a number of small islands, the Ahziv Coast Islands, which form a nature reserve in themselves. The islands are what remains of a sandstone ridge. Although now only the peaks are above water level, the entire ridge was once part of the continent. In the summer, common terns nest on the islands.
